Student of The Year 2022

Annemarie Munro Writers Bureau's Student of the Year 2022

It’s been another difficult and strange year, but in spite of this, we’ve still had some cracking entries to the 2022 Student of the Year Award. We’ve heard from students who only started their course in the past 12 months and from others who completed a while ago. It’s great to see that students can get published soon after starting their course whilst others continue to have success with their writing for years after.

We've also heard from one student who found studying helped her through a dark period in her life, to then go on and start a business in Proofreading and Copy Editing.

So, without keeping you in suspense any longer we have chosen Annemarie Munro to be our Student of the Year 2022. Since enrolling on the Comprehensive Creative Writing Course in January 2021 Annemarie has diligently followed the information in the course, and the advice from her tutor, earning her course fees back and more.

All the stories of our winners are inspirational. Hopefully you'll enjoy reading them and be inspired to give your writing ambitions a chance to become reality. If you do, you could be chosen to win the £250 first prize next year!

Annemarie Munro Writers Bureau's Student of the Year 2022Winner – Annemarie Munro – UK

Comprehensive Creative Writing Course

"I have seen my writing journey as an adventure: What can I write? What am I best at? What new aspects of writing can I discover and contribute towards? I have welcomed the wide range of modules covering different types of writing, challenging me to try new aspects in style and content, pushing me gently outside my comfort zone with encouragement.

"I have been published: Initial ambition achieved, although I have come to understand that to ‘be published' is not a ‘one off’ wish, but feeds a hunger to repeat the process and experience. The course modules have enabled me to build up a solid understanding of the different markets, legal guidelines, different approaches - interviews, research, reporting on live events, etc, working with editors and contractual matters for non-fictional work. My tutor has been extremely encouraging and supportive, providing me with the confidence to ‘have a go’, to pitch and see what happens. I now have a growing CV of published articles that supports my further pitches for new articles.

"I signed up for the course in December 2020 as a Christmas present to myself and I started the first module in January 2021. I have had eight pieces published: three paid earning £1080 and a star letter where I won a £250 hotel voucher.

"I know that, so far, my results are modest and represent more personal triumphs than the basis for a change in career. However, I enjoy the process of writing articles, and will seek to continue to pitch ideas to magazines, slowly perhaps widening my experience base, to appeal to a wider range of non-fictional magazines."

Novel and Short Story Course

"I took the Novel and Short Story Course with The Writers Bureau back in 2011. At the time, I had no idea whether I had it in me to write a novel. I didn’t even know if I could write. I took the course on a whim but I still remember when I got my first bit of feedback from my tutor. It totally took me by surprise, and for the first time, I realised I could actually do it. I could write a book.

"I mostly submitted short stories during the course, but they gave me inspiration to write the book I had always wanted to. The course helped me understand how the various writing tools worked e.g. dialogue, plot, character and point of view.

"I went on to take further writing courses and kept working on my debut novel. I finally got an agent in 2017 and signed my first deal in December for In The Company of Strangers. It was published in the UK by The Book Guild in 2019 and in South Asia by Simon and Schuster. It was published in audio format by Isis Audio in 2021.

"I signed a two-book deal with Orenda Books in October 2020, and my second novel, No Honour, was published in August 2021 to much critical acclaim. It became a Woman and Home Book of 2021 and went on to win the World Book Award (Woman and Home). Isis Audio published the audio version in 2021 as well.

"My writing success also helped me secure a TEDx talk which I delivered in November 2021. I am now writing another book for Orenda."

Proofreading and Copy Editing Course

"I took up the Proofreading and Copy Editing Course to develop my existing knowledge and learn new skills. However, it is not only on a professional level that The Writers Bureau has helped me; it has also helped me on a profoundly personal level too.

"During my time studying I was unfortunately thrown into the darkest period of my life and diagnosed with severe clinical depression. This is where my course really helped me. Even when my feelings and state of mind were at their lowest, I found my course was something positive to focus on. Its straightforward easy to follow way of learning allowed me to spend time, whenever I felt capable of doing so, to continue learning without any detrimental feelings of pressure or being overwhelmed.  With each day of my learning, I found it giving me a little more motivation, a sense of achievement with each new skill I learnt, but above all it gave me a sense of worth.

"Having successfully completed my course, I have been able to use my skills in numerous ways. I can now proofread and copy edit my own writing as I continue to strive to become a successful, published author. I am able to ensure any text in the gift designs are correct with the gifts and keepsake business I run and I have recently set up my own freelance proofreading and copy editing business, AS Freelance Proofreading and Copy Editing Owl. I have begun to create and establish relationships with several individuals and local businesses to offer my service. This is something I am extremely proud of and hope to continue to develop as my new business becomes established.

"With the consistent support network of both my tutor and the extended community of The Writers Bureau, along with family and close friends, I have been able to even in my darkest times achieve what I wanted to achieve. This has enabled me to move away from my previous job and on to much bigger and brighter path, both personally and professionally, and begin to live my dream."

Non-Fiction Writing Course

"Completing the Non-Fiction Writing Course has been life changing for me. Writing has not only allowed me the opportunity to share my knowledge and experience of living with chronic pain, it has also given me a greater life purpose. Receiving reader feedback on my blog or magazine articles to say that my content has resonated with or helped in some way is so rewarding and makes the hours of writing, which I love anyway, even more worth it.

"Aside from health writing, my other passion is travel writing. Seeing my first full length, paid article in print together with photographs that I took was truly an experience I won't forget. My total earnings throughout my course were £752 (cash and prizes).

"Before the course, I wouldn't have had the confidence or the knowledge to begin my writing journey.

"2022 is already shaping up to be a successful writing year for me, so thank you The Writers Bureau."

Article Writing Course

"I understood that the course would teach me how to write and understand the writing industry. The skills that I gained in the writing course were to be practised in the actual writing world. To date, I have not had much luck with editors. But I got started on the Upwork platform.

"My first writing job was to write a Guide to Booking Luxury Ski Chalets for the Courcheval area in France. He paid me more than initially agreed and was very happy with the job. Next, 30,000 words in 30 days, a subject I know a great deal about, decluttering. Next, 30,000 words for a Christian client whose self-help book was for the Christian recovery from addiction community. I gave this client 10,000 words per month. Another client wanted natural recipes with photographs and 500 words for each recipe. Finally, I did a small job writing a label for a natural cosmetic company. All this gave me a whopping total of $2,247.00 of earnings from writing. I earned this money between January and July of 2021.

"Before I took this course, I knew I loved writing. Now some time has passed after taking this course, and I know that I can write because that is what writers do, and I can be paid for it too. Thank you, The Writers Bureau."
