The Writers Bureau have announced Glenn Mansfield as the winner of their 2012 Short Story Competition – winning a first prize of £500!
Judge Iain Pattison said of the hundreds of entries he received:
"Judging the Writers Bureau competition is always great fun and this year’s entries were a delight to read. The standard was impressive, with a pleasing mix of eclectic and intriguing stories. From the poignant to the chilling, from the hardboiled to the whimsical, they tackled a number of varying themes, while demonstrating a variety of styles and voices.
I was particularly pleased to see such originality, wit and imagination, and thought that many of the entries – even though they didn’t end up in the prizes – were warm, moving and entertaining."
However, one story in particular stood out. That story was Glenn’s emotional entry, ‘Erosion’. Here Glenn tells The Writers Bureau what winning means to him:
"I am delighted to have had my story chosen as the winning entry. This is my second competition win this year! I was also joint winner of the Chapter One 2012 International Short Story Competition, with a story called Spirit Wood. These two winning stories have given me the encouragement and motivation to write more. I intend to use the money to fund travel, which will in turn give me more ideas for writing stories. Thank you.”
The worthy runners-up are:
2nd place – Alison Wassell with ‘Playground Games’, winning £300
3rd place – Hazel Osmond with ‘How to fall off a Soap-box’, winning £200
4th place – L E Robson with ‘Svetlana Chausava’, winning £100
Glenn’s story, plus those of the runners-up and Iain thoughts on them, can be read on The Writers Bureau website. Entries for the 2013 competition will be accepted from the 1st January 2013.
