Helen Summer

February 2019

Studied the Comprehensive Creative Writing course

Helen Summer"Since completing The Writers Bureau creative writing course in 2001, I have become the published writer of three non-fiction sports books (including one released in USA), been commissioned to ghost-write a book, had short stories and articles published nationally and internationally, and won or been short-listed in competitions.

"Interviews on radio and via social media regarding my books have followed, together with book signings at Foyles, Waterstones and sporting events around the UK, plus the Portsmouth Literary Festival in 2012.

"I am currently working on my first non-sports non-fiction book, continue to write articles and am a regular contributor to the Food and Drink Guide for both Dorset and Hampshire. I also prepare critiques for the Society of Women Writers and Journalists’ scheme for unpublished writers.

"Prior to partaking in The Writers Bureau course, I was unpublished and knew nothing about the world of writing. Without them, I am convinced I would still be unpublished. The course not only helped me become a publishable writer, but perhaps more importantly, it also taught me about the publishing world and how best to approach it. I will be forever grateful to The Writers Bureau for taking me from unpublished, hopeful writer to published author and, in the process, helping me to realise what I thought was an impossible dream."

Theresa Gooda Writers Bureau's Student of the Year 2021

“I began my first Writers Bureau course (Comprehensive Creative Writing) in 2007. Having more than covered the course fees from published pieces I have never looked back. Initially my ambitions were to get going. I knew I wanted to be a writer, I just didn’t know how to go about it, or, if I’m honest, quite what I wanted to write. Since, I have gradually blended a teaching career with writing, first with articles and short stories, then increasing the writing commitment dramatically when I secured an agent in 2016 to ghostwrite a series of memoirs. This year I have undertaken The Art of Writing Poetry course to really hone my skills in what I now realise is a genre I love - and have already had my first poems published.”
