March 2019
"I enrolled on the Creative Writing Course in March 2009, and in less than a year my writing had repaid the course fee. In 2011 I was awarded Writer of the Year.
"Since then I’ve been writing steadily for magazines, in particular ‘Your Chickens,’ and am now recognised as a chicken expert. I was even interviewed by Jeremy Vine on Radio 2 for a chicken-related feature, which was very exciting (or perhaps eggs-citing!).
"A Family Guide to Keeping Chickens was published in January 2014. After completing the section of the course on planning a non-fiction book, I had the confidence to approach a publisher with a proposal. I was overjoyed when they agreed – and a little daunted to have a deadline of six months to write it. The manuscript was finished on time and scheduled for publication in May 2013, but in December 2012 the publisher was taken over by Constable and Robinson. It was an anxious time, but fortunately C&R decided to go ahead with my book. They required some changes to the format, however, including fully illustrating the text with colour photographs. Publication was put back to January 2014. This was very disappointing but turned out for the best – as it took me that long to source all the pictures. The result was worth all my efforts and I still feel very satisfied with my book, which went on to receive excellent reviews.
"A second edition of A Family Guide to Keeping Chickens came out in January 2018. Another take-over at the publishers resulted in the colour photographs no longer being required, but apart from some updates, the text is largely unchanged. My aims were to provide clear and comprehensive information for complete beginner to henthusiast, for it to be well-written, and also fun. There are sections for the children, some terrible chicken jokes and plenty of anecdotes illustrating the ups and downs of chicken-keeping. My aim when I started writing professionally was to produce work I could be proud of, and to date this book has been my greatest achievement.
"My ambition for 2019 is to – finish my course! The only problem has been the success engendered by the early part, which has led to me fulfilling my ambitions, although not quite in the way I’d once envisaged. One day I will get started on my novel. The working title: Fifty Shades of Chickens."
"I have seen my writing journey as an adventure: What can I write? What am I best at? What new aspects of writing can I discover and contribute towards? I have welcomed the wide range of modules covering different types of writing, challenging me to try new aspects in style and content, pushing me gently outside my comfort zone with encouragement. "I signed up for the course in December 2020 as a Christmas present to myself and I started the first module in January 2021. I have had eight pieces published: three paid earning £1080 and a star letter where I won a £250 hotel voucher." Annemarie Munro - Writers Bureau Student of the Year 2022 |
