Poets play games with language, and this should be celebrated. In each of the two-sessions of this Zoom workshop you'll look at a single word-game exercise that has the potential to produce a fascinating poem, and can be used again and again. With numbers strictly limited to ten there is plenty of time to ask questions. In between the sessions you'll be encourage to write a poem which you can share at the start of the second week should you want to.
This is a great opportunity to develop your poetry skills and make friends with others on the same journey. It’ll be exciting, lots of fun, and give you the confidence to take your writing forward. This workshop is suitable for writers who want to develop their poetry writing skills.
Week 1: In this session you'll talk about the value of retaining the ludic quality in writing poetry. Alison will then take you step-by-step through a word-game from which you'll start to write a free verse poem. You'll then look at the use of puns in poetry.
Week 2: After sharing your poems inspired by the work covered in week 1, you'll look at taking advantage of the huge number of words in the English language. Alison will take you through an exercise to help you select words that are not so obvious for your subject. You'll round off the session by looking at a perverse poem.
Examples of the exercise techniques will be included in the notes which are sent out by email after each session.
