Legodile SenganbengLegodile ‘Dredd X’ Seganabeng is a writer of fiction, non- fiction and poetry. He was born, raised and lives in Botswana. He graduated with a Bachelor of Technology in Fine Arts from the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2005 and works for the government of Botswana as a high school teacher of Art and Design.

His early non-fiction work appeared in a South African art journal, Art Source, and the newspaper Sunday World. In 2010, Seganabeng’s story, The Moon has Eyes, won the Bessie Head Literature awards, and it was published alongside works by other writers in an anthology called The Moon has Eyes and Other Stories in 2011 by Pentagon Publishers, Botswana.

After he started a Comprehensive Creative Writing program with The Writers Bureau he began to write extensively as a freelance writer for newspapers and magazines. He has written for the Midweek Sun, Botswana Guardian, Weekend Post, Dreams magazine, and Air Botswana’s in-flight magazine, Peolwane. He also wrote for Botswana Tourism Organisation’s annual magazine, Discover Botswana. Seganabeng has published several short stories with Drum magazine in South Africa and is currently putting together an anthology of short stories.

In early 2012, one of his poems was featured, alongside poems by 13 other Batswana poets, in a prestigious literary journal, Prairie Schooner, a publication out of the University of Nebraska. Some of his poetry is published and broadcasted at Badilisha Poetry Radio in Cape Town, South Africa, a podcast platform exclusively dedicated to the out- standing voices of Africa and its Diaspora.

By mid 2013, Seganabeng won an international Egyptian short story contest, The Forgotten Writers’ Women Domination Short Story Competition.

His debut novel, Josie, was published in 2014 by Black Crake Books.

In 2016, Seganabeng was selected to participate as an honorary fellow in writing in the coveted International Writing Program, a writing residency hosted by the University of Iowa in USA.

Seganabeng is a recorded poet whose works have been performed at the Maun International Arts Festival in Botswana, the Harare International Festival of the Arts in Zimbabwe, Jozi Spoken Word Fest in South Africa and the Iowa Book Festival in the USA.

His poetry and music album, Poetic Meditations, recorded under his psydonym Dredd X, continues to enjoy air play in local radio stations.

He has worked with the US Embassy, ACHAB Global Fund and the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives to produce three short story anthologies by secondary school students in the Botswana.

As a teacher in Maun Senior Secondary School, Seganabeng is a mentor for the Poetry Club and the School Band, where he works with students to develop and nurture their creative skills in writing, music and performance. His students have performed at the annual Maun International Arts Festival, the National Practical Subjects Fair and have been featured in the 2018 Botswana Defence Force Band concert.

Seganabeng is the founder/chairperson of the Poetavango Collective, a community literary organisation based in Maun, Botswana.

“I began my first Writers Bureau course (Comprehensive Creative Writing) in 2007. Having more than covered the course fees from published pieces I have never looked back. Initially my ambitions were to get going. I knew I wanted to be a writer, I just didn’t know how to go about it, or, if I’m honest, quite what I wanted to write. Since, I have gradually blended a teaching career with writing, first with articles and short stories, then increasing the writing commitment dramatically when I secured an agent in 2016 to ghostwrite a series of memoirs. This year I have undertaken The Art of Writing Poetry course to really hone my skills in what I now realise is a genre I love - and have already had my first poems published.”
