Studied the Comprehensive Creative Writing course and the Proofreading and Copy Editing course

Alison SpencerMy journey with The Writers Bureau began at the end of 2009/beginning of 2010 when I undertook their Comprehensive Creative Writing course. I went on to have several articles published in newspapers and magazines and in 2011 won a short story competition in Writing Magazine. This made me grow in confidence to realise that I actually could write! I began look for freelance writer jobs and took up a position with a CV company writing CVs (I started off my career in recruitment). In 2011 I set up my own CV writing and career coaching business, The Write Career and wrote a fortnightly career column in my local paper. I have since published my first book, “Creating Your Classic Career.”

A few years later I was back at The Writers Bureau to take the Proofreading and Copy Editing course. I love English grammar and reading so I thought it was the perfect opportunity to enhance and develop my freelance skills within this remit. It was such a helpful and worthwhile course and afterwards I was confident that I could find some proofreading work. Don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t happen overnight. As mentioned in the course, you have to go and find the work, it won’t just come to you.

Since becoming a proofreader I have had the pleasure of working with authors and students in various genres, some with dyslexia who find proof reading and editing their own work extremely difficult.

“I’m currently working on my fourth book, have been paid for my writing by at least 15 different magazines, and now earn half my income from writing – all thanks to The Writers Bureau’s course."
