About Us

The Writers Bureau was formed to provide a practical resource that would help people through their writing apprenticeship. The vision was to create a course that anyone - regardless of age or educational background - could benefit from.

In January 1989 we opened our doors and quickly became popular with those seeking to learn the secrets of success in the publishing world. Our courses have helped thousands of new writers to build their confidence, find their voice and see their name in print.

The Writers Bureau is part of a group of home-study colleges which includes Business Training and STT. Our original college was founded in 1931. Over the years we have successfully trained hundreds of thousands of students world-wide. We are specialists in open and distance learning with substantial knowledge and experience in this field.

Student Stories
"I needed the expertise of the one-to-one tuition that The Writers Bureau offered. The assignments were so well targeted that I managed to sell every piece of course work to magazines and newspapers - with requests for more. "Now, I've had eighteen novels published and work regularly for magazines, running my writing career as a small business. It is simply a dream come true. I am having a lovely time - being interviewed, appearing on radio and TV, giving talks - but most of all I'm earning a living doing what I love most. Writing. The Writers Bureau made this possible for me." Christina Jones, Award Winning Writer
"When I saw The Writers Bureau pledge to refund my signing-on fee if I didn't earn it before finishing the course, I remember thinking: "I hope so, because I'll never earn that much...' Never has it felt so good to be proven wrong. "Besides seeing my first book in print ... I am writing flat-out, and getting paid what I can now describe with pride as a decent salary." Tim Skelton, Netherlands
"My first publishing success was a letter in "The Lady' magazine, for which I received £25. My next success was with "Home Farmer', then I had two pieces published in the "Good Life', for which I was paid an incredible £100. "The Guardian' then published a piece and paid me £300, I nearly fell over. Plus, I've received the first part of a significant advance from Bloomsbury for my book "MOB Rule: Lessons Learned by a Mother of Boys'. Hannah Evans, Devon

Frequently Asked Questions Who should take a creative writing course?

Anyone who wants to improve their writing craft should take a creative writing course. The Writers Bureau course is ideal for beginners but even if you've had previous experience of writing this course can help you to find new markets and improve your writing style.

What qualifications do I need to become a published writer?

The short answer is none - in the formal, traditional sense of qualifications. The only real pre-requisite needed is a love of writing, determination and persistence - everything else can be learnt, even the ability to write well.

Who will my tutor be?

All our tutors are published writers. You will be introduced to your tutor after you send in your first assignment.

How long will my course take?

We recommend you complete one assignment a month, so around 20 months. However, you have a full four years to complete your course so should you need to take a break, or need to study at a slower pace, you can.

Will you show me how to sell my writing?

Yes we will. There is a whole module devoted to selling your work as well as further information throughout the course and guidance from your tutor.
