Writing Around The World

March 6th, 2015

David-Kinchin---tutor---blogI first came to the Writers Bureau as a student in January 1991.  The study course was a Christmas present to myself.  My previous career had been cut short through no fault of my own and I was desperate to write – full of fury and energy.  I had been both physically and psychologically injured following a major assault in July 1990.

The Bureau, and especially my tutor Irene Yates, taught me how to channel my emotions into my writing.  It worked.  It worked for me career-wise because I started to sell my written work. It worked for me personally because writing is incredibly therapeutic and a great way to relieve the stresses and strains of everyday life.  Writing cured me, personally.  My submission of assignments led to me becoming ABCC (Association of British Correspondence Colleges) Distance Learning Student of the Year 1992.

Being full of ideas and suggestions for subjects, I wanted to put something back into the system and so became a tutor for the course that did so much for me.  That was 1994, and since then I have been a tutor, working with students from an estimated forty-five different countries and loving every minute of the challenge of helping someone else achieve their dream of writing. The successes my students have had – and there have been many – have also been my successes and I always get immense pleasure in seeing someone achieve their potential, writing good publishable material.

Over the past twenty years I have worked with thousands of students and I now have good friends all around the world: West Indies, Australia, Africa, North America, Asia and Europe.

In 2007, Writers Bureau drew upon my expertise and knowledge of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder [PTSD] and I wrote a course for counselling students and for others interested in the subject of PTSD.  I tutor that course as well as having written three textbooks on the subject which have just topped combined sales of 25,000 copies.

For me, being a member of staff with the Writers Bureau is like being a part of a big, extended family – with offspring all over the world.
