The Humble Diary

August 12th, 2011

guestbloggerOne of the first things I remember being told is that if you want to make it as a writer you have to write every day. What? That is not possible I don’t have much free time, I thought. But wait a minute actually it’s not that difficult. I bought a note book and wrote, “Jayne’s Diary” across the front. Now, several notebooks later I am addicted to writing my diary. It is a pleasure and not a chore to write every day. Well, almost every day.

Developing my Craft

My diaries are not just full of what is happening in my life although that does play a major part. I like to experiment with different techniques from writing a dialogue, I may have over heard during the day, to describing a place I have visited. I can be as flamboyant and colourful as I like. After all, this is for my eyes only and I can write whatever I like. I see it as having fun with words and finding out with what does and doesn’t work for me. It is a brilliant way of building up a store of ideas. I can flick back through the pages and, more often than not, find something that I can develop further and produce a piece of work out of.

When and Where

Most of my entries are written at the end of the day. I get the kids to bed and settle down with a coffee and my beloved book and pen. Sometimes it’s only a quick 10 minute half a page. Yet, at others I sit for hours and produce page after page. I find it so relaxing to just put the day’s events into order and make sense of everything that has happened. My book and I put the world to rights.

Warming up the Engines

More often than not I find that once my entry for the day is complete, my brain has got into gear and, I am filled with inspiration. The ideas just flow out onto the page and magically start to become articles or stories.

A bit about me, I enrolled on the Comprehensive Writing Course in January 2011 and the Proofreading and Copy-editing Course in May 2011. I have had a few small successes to date. As well as keeping my diary I like to blog regularly about anything and everything at http://jayneanderson.blogspot.com (new beginnings)
