Winner of Short Story Competition Announced

September 30th, 2011

As you can see, I’ve been having something of an easy time with two guest bloggers following each other. First, thanks to Amanda for her blog. As I mentioned three weeks ago, she has now taken over as editor of Chapter and Verse – so you’ll be hearing more from her over the next few months.

Find yourself a writing buddy

As she says, writing can be a solitary occupation. If you’re already a student but feeling a bit isolated you can always join one of our forums on the website. If you’re not a student, have a look at the National Association of Writers’ Groups website to see if there are any writing groups in your area that you could join. And don’t be put off by the fact that you might not yet have achieved publication. Remember you’re a writer, and I bet you’ll find other members that are still working their way towards that goal.

Not for Fame and Fortune

Next, thanks to Steve for stepping in at very short notice as my guest last week. I know Steve because he wrote part of our Writing for Children course and did a terrific job. But as he says, for most writers it’s the satisfaction – or dare I say, compulsion – of writing that drives them, not the fame or fortune!

BBC Short Story Competition

Hard on the heels of all the furore about the BBC cutting its short story output comes the winner of their 2011 National Short Story Competition in conjunction with the Booktrust. If you listened to the five shortlisted entries being broadcast (or downloaded them as a podcast) I’d love to know whether you think David Wilson is a worthy winner. But with a £15,000 prize and national acclaim he’s certainly one writer that’s achieved both fame and fortune!

National Poetry Day

This year seems to have flown by – we’re already round to National Poetry Day on 6th October. This year’s theme is ‘Games’ and you can interpret it any way you like! The website has lots of ideas and activities – so if you’re a poet, why not get some like-minded friends together and join in?
