Five Top Tips for Using SEO

May 28th, 2014

What is SEO?

SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is essentially how you make your website visible to people using search engines like Google, Bing or Yahoo. Using it effectively means that your website will appear in the top few results whenever someone searches for something relevant, meaning more visits to your page! Read on for our top tips for increasing your web traffic.

1. Use Keywords

Keywords will tell a search engine, as well as your readers, what your article is about, so using keywords or key phrases is a great way to raise your place in the search engine results. But be careful, using too many keywords can be off-putting to a reader and can make an article less effective or difficult to read. Keywords have their place, but use them sparingly or you risk upsetting the overall effect of your writing.

2. Use Tags and Categories

Most blogs now come with the option to “tag” your posts, letting you select keywords or phrases without having to work them in to the article itself. You can also help to improve your blog’s visibility by making sure that articles are properly categorised.

3. Make use of Social Media

Social media is a writer’s best friend if used properly. Sites like Facebook and Twitter are free, easy to use and allow you to reach a huge international audience with just one click. If you post a new article or blog, make sure to tweet a link or post about it on Facebook, even if it’s only to your friends and family at first. You’ll be surprised how much your readership grows! Also, make sure to make friends with other similar writers on social media sites. Like and share posts, re-tweet their links or mention them in a comment. If you’re lucky, they might return the favour.

4. Get organised!

Keep track of what works and what doesn’t, and write it down! If a post doesn’t have the desired effect, or no one seems to be clicking your links, keep a note of the things you did differently. No post is a failed post as long as you learn something from it, you’ll soon figure out what your readers like and what they don’t!

5. Know Your Readers

Once you’ve figured out what your readers want, make sure you use that information to your advantage. Try to put yourself in their shoes and think about what they would want to read, what questions they will have, and, most importantly, what they might search for. The key to effective SEO is being able to answer the questions people ask most frequently.
