Think Of Yourself As A Writer, Not A Beginner

I have been reading “Write ON! The Writer’s Help Book” by Adrian Magson recently and amongst  the excellent advice he offers throughout was this gem:

We’re learning all the time. It’s another fascinating aspect of life; that learning never stops. But there’s a point at which you have to put that learning to good use, rather than simply doing more of the same. And one way to do that is to think of yourself as a writer. Not merely a beginner. Expanding your horizons as a freelance

There’s nothing like seeing your work published, but you can utilise your writing in other ways.

Freelance writing is difficult, especially in travel, my speciality.  So, in 2009, I decided to concentrate on renewing my public speaking skills.  Another participant at the Swanwick Summer Writers School spoke glowingly about  Toastmasters International, so my partner and I joined Didsbury Speakers. £55,000 prize money for winners of the Costa Book Awards

First, Happy New Year to everyone!  I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and, like me, you’re probably glad the snow has gone.   But I couldn’t resist including one of the pics that my daughter-in-law took of Kenilworth Castle over the festive season – whether you like snow or not, that kind of view takes some beating.

Onwards & Upwards!

Writing courses I began my writing career in 1999 after sending for the Comprehensive Writers Bureau Course. My first article was published in ‘The Lady’ magazine in December of the same year, and I’ve worked full-time as a freelance writer ever since.  This August I began the Novel and Short Story Writing Course. After eleven years of writing non-fiction I needed a new challenge.  Since begining the course I’ve sold some short stories, and made the follow up list from the Mills & Boon ‘New Voices’ competition.  I’ve also completed a novella and have started my first novel.
