jobs_BlogA friend of ours got a new job last week – Senior Copywriter for one of the big banks. I’m not sure what the salary is, but it’s more than her last post (also copywriting) and comes with all the perks of full-time employment – holiday pay; sickness benefits; pension plan, etc. Understandably, she’s delighted, and though she’s not planning a mansion on Millionaires’ Row just yet, she may well take an extra holiday some time in the new year. You Can’t Always Get What You Want

newsprint-blogBack in the late 90’s I was working as an actor with a little theatre company in Brussels. We toured shows around Belgium and France, which sounds really exciting – and it was. But I’d been doing it for ten years and wasn’t exactly earning a fortune, so I was looking for a change.

Moving back to  the UK, I really fancied the writers’ life – staying home, on my own, lots of time to think, lots of coffee … sounded like heaven. But tinkering around with a story that eventually grew into an epic fantasy trilogy, I soon realized that, for me, novel writing wasn’t going to pay the bills. writer.com-blogDo you remember your first email? I do. My wife showed me how to send it. I sat next to her with a pad taking notes on what and when to click. It all seemed very complicated and, scarily, wasn’t that long ago. Everything’s changed now though – Twitter, Facebook, Linkedin, Google Plus … we’re in a digital world, and if you want to be a writer (or a musician, photographer, even a plumber!) you’ve got to have some kind of presence out there.
