Standing Orders

March 24th, 2017

When I worked for a high street bank I was taught all about standing orders. These allow you to pay the same amount of money to the same person/company on a continuous basis. It’s a regular commitment.

Whenever a new customer opened up a current account with us we encouraged them to open up a savings account too. Then we’d set up a standing order to transfer a small amount to their new savings account on the day after payday.

Transfer £50 every month and after 12 months those small little deposits mount up to £600. Not a bad little sum: ideal to put towards Christmas, or perhaps a summer holiday.

What I didn’t realise when I embarked on my freelance writing career was that writers should make standing orders too. Not financial ones, but time and word standing orders. Read the rest of this entry »

The Third Way – Writing To Earn Money From Home!

October 19th, 2015

third.wayCome on now, let’s get our cards on the table. What, exactly, do we all want out of this ‘writing’ business? Worldwide fame and fortune like J. K. Rowling and Stephen King? Or literary kudos? Maybe one of us could be the next Arundhati Roy, or Lemn Sissay?

Well, to be honest, either would be nice. But the way things are, I’ll settle for a third option: staying home (so I’m here when the kids get back from school) with no ‘boss’ breathing down my neck, making a bit of extra money doing something I love – something I do anyway, paid or not.

Outside The Box

June 15th, 2015

BoxesI’m thinking about article writing again; getting ready to make a first pitch to an editor later this summer. I’m all set to work on text, and there will be pictures (either ones I’ve taken myself or sourced images with permissions and licenses.) But I’ve just been flicking through some old copies of E-Zee Writer, where I stumbled on an article by the always informative Simon Whaley, and it’s given me some great ideas for bonus features that are sure to make me look like a seasoned pro’ – boxouts, side-panels and side-bars. No Time To Waste

May 18th, 2015

Pitch-BlogRight, now, I’m not getting fixated or anything, but last week I blogged about magazine articles and, here I am again, blogging about … magazine articles. Y’see, I’ve got these ideas – all good, publishable, and I’ve got my editorial calendar sorted, but the thing I’m not sure about is how to approach an editor. So I’ve been looking back through the E-Zee Writer archive to get some advice and, as usual, it’s come up trumps. Back in June 2009, Simon Whaley wrote a piece called Perfect Pitches, all about making a good impression and striking deals with editors, and it’s proving to be a great help. Christmas Is Coming

May 11th, 2015

xmas-tree-BlogI’m branching out. As well as blogs, songs and stories, I’m going to start writing articles. I know I can do it, and I certainly need the money. So I’m getting organised – ready to work.

First job is setting up my own editorial calendar. And how do you do that? Well, scooting around the internet I found a great series of ‘How To’ articles at Lorelle on WordPress. They’re aimed mainly at bloggers, but I’ve found their tips useful for all sorts of writing jobs. Amongst other things, they pointed me toward a website called timeanddate.com where I’ve customized a calendar covering the whole of the next eighteen months. Telling it where I live, it’s included all my local state and religious holidays, so I now have everything from Pancake Day to Diwali on a massive one page per month wall-hanging that’s going to be the foundation of my article writing campaign.
