Onwards & Upwards!

December 30th, 2010

Writing courses I began my writing career in 1999 after sending for the Comprehensive Writers Bureau Course. My first article was published in ‘The Lady’ magazine in December of the same year, and I’ve worked full-time as a freelance writer ever since.  This August I began the Novel and Short Story Writing Course. After eleven years of writing non-fiction I needed a new challenge.  Since begining the course I’ve sold some short stories, and made the follow up list from the Mills & Boon ‘New Voices’ competition.  I’ve also completed a novella and have started my first novel.

Invest in your Writing Career

I hope those who are struggling with their course at the moment will take heart from this and see that investing in your writing career is never a waste of time or money.

No blog at this time of the year would be complete without New Year resolutions.  For me, writing resolutions need to fulfil three criteria.

  • They have to be a challenge
  • They have to be attainable
  • They should be public i.e. I tell someone what I’m planning and this provides me the incentive to continue.

So, in black and white, for all to see (and maybe give you some ideas for your own) my writing new years resolutions for 2011 are:

  • To finish or rewrite all those projects I began and filed away. Off hand I know I have two 50,000 ‘NaNoWriMo’ mss and three short stories to start me off in January!
  • To earn enough money from my fiction writing to attend the Writer’s Digest Conference in January 2012. This includes conference fees, a week in the top class hotel where it is held, flights from the UK to the USA and of course, spending money. Who knows, I may even earn enough to travel first class!
  • Last but by no means least, to complete my WB Fiction Writing Course and send in my assignments on a regular basis, ie one/month.

Happy New Year!
