Something for Everyone!

September 28th, 2016

Iseo-096-blogFirst, thanks to Jacqueline for her blog earlier this month. I must apologise for the lack of posts over the last couple of weeks, but I’ve been away on holiday. I love the Italian lakes and having already visited the three most well-known ones – Garda, Maggiore and Como – we decided to try Iseo.  It’s quieter and less geared up to English tourists but the scenery is fantastic, the walking/cycling is great and there’s so much to see and do using the local trains.

But I had to smile when we arrived at a little station, in the middle of nowhere, after a long walk. The train was delayed, the man in the ticket office had gone off to lunch (obligatory in Italy) and the ticket machine was broken. But there, in pride of place, was a stand containing lots of books with a notice asking readers to leave the books they’d read and feel free to take a replacement. The UK’s obviously not the only country pushing this scheme!

Enough of my holiday – here are a few things going on in the writing world that might interest you. First, there’s the Notting Hill Editions Essay Prize 2017. I’ve included this because essay competitions are few and far between, so it might be of interest to anyone who prefers non-fiction writing.

It’s only held every two years and the prizes are extremely good. The winner receives £20,000 and there are five runners-up prizes of £1,000 each. In addition, the winners will see their work published by the company in hardback format. Entries must be between 2,000 and 8,000 words each (on any subject) and the closing date is 9th January 2017. A word of warning, though, the entry fee is £20 per essay.

Next we’ve got a £25 discount off our Proofreading and Copy Editing Course if you enrol before 2nd October. It’s a very popular course as it can be used in lots of different ways. If you’re really keen you can use it as a way of setting up your own freelance business as a proofreader. But, even if you don’t want to take it so far, it’s invaluable for proofing your own work if you’re a writer or putting on your CV as an additional skill you can use in your day job.

Don’t forget that we’re now accepting entries to our Flash Fiction Competition.  There are three prizes: £300, £200 and £100 but all our winners also receive a Writers Bureau course of their choice.

Finally, BBC2 are holding a poetry night this coming Saturday starting at 8.10pm. There is a variety of offerings but the final hour is called ‘Poets at the BBC’ and includes recordings of Britain’s favourite poets from their archive. Enjoy!
