Proofreading Silliness

January 29th, 2014

Continuing on the theme of the importance of proofreading, I thought I’d show you some of the funnier, and embarrassing, consequences that have occurred from not doing it carefully enough. In fact, just a quick search brings up plenty of websites that are wholly dedicated to pointing out the errors people find, like this one Book Errata, who report terribly proofread books to their publishers.

While the errors reported may not be particularly funny in nature, you can easily see how those listed for this book Hip Knit Hats, could make buying it a complete waste of time. After all, what’s the use of buying a book with incorrect knitting patterns in it! And it won’t take long for the reviews of people who’ve bought the book to percolate around the web. It could spell disaster for the author, and you certainly don’t want that author to be you.

Book Errata also have a list of published books they’ve proofed, with details of the numbers of errors, ranging from error free to horrendous. And, if you read any of the books on the list and find other errors, you can report them for addition to the list.

But proofreading errors don’t just happen in books. Oh no! They happen in places that are much more conspicuous and embarrassing for those involved. Have a giggle at these hilarious examples 10 of the Biggest Proofreading Screw-ups of all Time

Does all this make you think you might need some proofreading skills? If it does, you’re in luck because next week’s Course Of The Week is (yes, you’ve guessed it) our Proofreading and Copy Editing course, so you’ll get £25 off! Keep your eye open for the special offer email landing in your box.
