Do I Need a Proofreader?

June 26th, 2013

In a nutshell – yes! In fact, anyone who writes needs the services of a proofreader, including people who think they can write error free. Why? Because the human brain is a tricky customer. When you’ve written something, it’s really hard for you to see any errors. This is simply because you are too near to it, and your brain will insert the correct punctuation, word or whatever’s needed, because it thinks, or knows, it should be there.

I cannot tell you the number of times I’ve written a blog, read it and re-read it only to have several errors pointed out to me by the proofreader. And these are not words that you’d think it’d be easy to miss out. They are words like ‘of’, ‘in’, ‘the’ and ‘and’, which, when omitted, can completely change the meaning of a sentence. So, no matter how great a writer you think you are, you are not, I repeat NOT, immune from making errors!

Why is it important? As I’ve said a number of times before, publishers like pieces of creative writing that require as little work as possible. So, if you want to improve your chances of being published, it’s wise to give them what they want.

And how do you go about doing that? Well, that’s easy, you can do two things: either learn how to proofread yourself or get someone else to do it for you. All you need to decide is which route you prefer. If you choose to simply get your work proofread by someone else, it’s pretty straightforward. You just need to find a proofreader who has the experience and skill you are looking for and hire them. However, if you learn how to proofread for yourself, you’ll be able to check your own work, saving you money. Plus, you’ll have the skills to be able to proofread other peoples work, earning yourself a bit of extra cash along the way. I think that’s what they call a win–win situation!

When you look at it like that, it’s easy to see which is the better option – a little financial investment and work to train yourself as a proofreader can save you lots of time and money in the long run!

And, if you want to learn, get yourself enrolled on our Proofreading and Copy editing course, it teaches you everything you need to proofread your own, and other people’s, work.
