Onwards and Upwards!

September 12th, 2014

After three years with The Writers Bureau I’m  excited and a little bit sad to say that I’m now moving on to a new role doing what I’ve always wanted to do. As of 1st September 2014 I started my training as a Primary School teacher.

It might seem like a complete change of direction for my career, but there are a lot of things I’ve learned in my time at The Writers Bureau that will help me with my training – after all, I’ll still be helping students with their problems! It’s been great experience in terms of improving my communication skills and the way I approach a problem, and I’m hoping that will serve me well once I get in the classroom.

During my interview, I was asked to describe my proudest achievement in the workplace, and I talked at great length about all the successful students I’ve worked with in my time here who have gone on to start a new career in writing. It was too difficult to pick just one of you! It really is a fantastic feeling to get an email or a phone-call from a student who has sold their first piece of writing. We’re not just pretending to be happy for you – it’s the best part of our job!

As a lot of you probably know, I’m a writer myself and that’s what originally attracted me to the Student Services position. I’ve been lucky enough to have all the course materials to hand, as well as being able to talk to some of the tutors about my work, and that’s definitely been a perk of the job! I’m still working on my long-suffering novel, but even I can see that it’s come on in leaps and bounds over the past three years and I have The Writers Bureau to thank for that.

Even though my teaching career is going to have to be a priority for the next couple of years while I find my feet, I don’t intend to stop writing. I might not be able to dedicate as much time to it as I can now, but even if it’s just an hour a week, I’m going to keep moving forward. Very few writers have the luxury of being able to give up their day job to stay at home and write, so I don’t think a full time job gives me any excuse to stop trying – though perhaps I won’t be participating in NaNoWriMo this year!

As excited as I am to be starting a new chapter of my life, I’m really going to miss working with the great friends I’ve made at The Writers Bureau and I’ve promised faithfully to keep in touch. I wish you all the best of luck for the future, and I hope the student successes keep on coming.
