Getting Out And About Again

September 5th, 2021

Now that (at least some) of the world is opening up again, I thought we’d take a look at what it takes to be a travel writer. I know that some of you out there (just like me) are itching to hop on a plane and go adventuring again. Or you’ve got notes on fascinating places in the UK that you’ve visiting during your ‘staycation’.

But I’m going to do it the easy way by directing you to a post by Rachel Newcombe on the Writing World site. The advice she gives is concise and sensible and there is a useful list of sites that you can visit for further information at the bottom of her piece.

If you are interested in this type of writing then you might also want to have a look at an article entitled 36 Travel Magazines and Websites that Pay Freelance Writers. The markets are predominantly American, with payment in dollars, but there may be opportunities for pieces about other parts of the world that are of interest to American readers. And 21 Magazines That Pay for Travel Writing is worth checking out. They mention Wanderlust magazine which has a useful page giving guidelines for writers who are interested in working with them.

However, if this is a route you would like to take then you need to be able to write with originality and some lateral thinking. I’d also say that to succeed you’ll probably spend as much time researching a market for your travel piece, analysing the type of material they publish and finding the right angle to approach them with as it took you to make the trip and gather your information.

So bear in mind two points we stress in our Creative Writing Course and always try to have a market or markets in mind before you set off so that you can tailor your research to what you will write. And, aim to get as many differently slanted articles out of each single trip as you can. Using your research in a variety of forms is the way to make your writing really pay. Finally, don’t forget your camera/phone. Good quality, relevant pics can often make the different between acceptance and rejection.

And still on the subject of opening up, it’s lovely to start meeting in groups again rather than on Zoom. So, if you want to join a writing group check out the National Association of Writers’ Groups (NAWG). There’s a directory of groups by region and there may be one near you. If not, they offer useful tips on setting one up yourself with like-minded people. You don’t need to join to get this information but if you do join then there are annual writing competitions to take part in, a newsletter, review service and their annual NAWG Fest which takes place over a weekend with workshops, speakers and networking.
