How Will I Find Work as a Freelance Writer?

December 5th, 2012

That’s easy! No, really, it is because there are thousands upon thousands of publications that you can freelance write for out there. All you need to do is find them, decide which ones you want to write for and then find out a little more about each one. And please don’t think that what you see on the shelves of your local WH Smiths newsagent is all that’s out there – it’s not! So where else can I find publications to write for? Well, you can use:

the internet –  this is your biggest and best resource. Most magazines and newspapers have a website you can visit – these usually have contact details and examples of the kind of work they accept. There are also thousands of online only publications to search through as well as websites that you can use to search for even more markets by tapping into trade publications.

market books – these are books such as The Writers’ and Artists’ Yearbook, which contains details of all the publishers in the UK, including contact details, what they publish and whether or not they accept freelance work – that’s pretty much all you need.

your local library – it may sound silly, but local libraries do have stocks of magazines and there may be some you’ve never heard of or given any consideration to. And, your local library needs your support so get yourself down there.

friends and family – asking around your friends and family might throw up some publications you could consider writing for. Plus, you might be able to get hold of copies to use for your market research, which would be a huge bonus.

social media – much like the previous point, people you connect with via social media can tell you what they read and enjoy.

So, as you can see, there are so many ways you can find publications to write for – there really should be no-one saying ‘I can’t find any I want to write for.’ Seriously, if you are saying that, you are not trying hard enough!
