Fancy a Writers’ Retreat?

November 15th, 2013

First, thanks to Emily for last week’s more unusual take on NaNoWriMo. Once again, good luck to all of you who are currently slogging your way through those first 50,000 words of your novel.

Self Control

Sometimes, even the most motivated people find themselves time wasting – doing anything rather than settling down to what they really need to get on with. So, when I came across the Self Control app, I thought I’d have a closer look. And to be honest, it does exactly what it says on the site: Self Control lets you block your own access to distracting websites, your mail servers, or anything else on the Internet. Just set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blacklist, and click “Start.” Until that timer expires, you will be unable to access those sites – even if you restart your computer or delete the application.

But, once the time expired, this led to further browsing (!) and I discovered Ten online tools for better attention and focus. I’m not really a hopeless case and most of the time self-discipline works for me, but some of the suggestions may be of interest to more “techie” writers who feel they have a problem.

Residential Library

Next, onto what sounds like a wonderful way to get away from it all and give yourself a bit of “me” time to concentrate on your writing: Gladstone’s Library. It was founded by Prime Minister William Gladstone himself and is situated only a quarter of a mile away from his home at Howarden Castle in Flintshire. As Britain’s finest residential library it has become a memorial to his life and works.

As well as being able to use the library resources you can book a room there at reasonable rates and they hold “conversation dinners” with topics for discussion so that if you are there on your own you soon start talking to others and exchanging ideas.

So, if the thought of a quirky retreat appeals to you, why not have a look at rates and availability.

My guest next week is Jane Lobb (pen name Jane Isaac) who is a novelist and runner up in the Writers Bureau Student of the Year 2013 Competition. She’ll be sharing her views on the importance of research.
