Effective Time Management for Writers

September 24th, 2010

The winners of the Writers Bureau Poetry and Short Story Competition 2010 have now been announced and their entries are available on the website . If you are reading this and are one of those talented winners – congratulations – you deserve it!

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that sometimes I struggle to find time to write. Well, I’ve been particularly busy this week as it’s the launch of our new Effective Time Management Course. It’s been written for us by Writers Bureau tutor, Simon Whaley, and it has really made me sit up and assess how I spend my time.

It includes some great suggestions for fitting more into each day and getting everything done. Often, if you feel overwhelmed by what you need to do, this can lead to stress. You spend so much time worrying about how you’re going to cope that you start procrastinating (sound familiar?) – and once that kicks in it becomes even harder. You can’t made sensible decision, you dither and then find you really don’t have enough time.

But the course isn’t all about stress and work. There are some great suggestions for de-cluttering your life, being more assertive and making more ‘me’ time (time to write?)

It doesn’t matter whether you’re a technophobe like me – who likes to plan using pen and paper – or whether you’re a technophile who prefers to do everything online. The course caters for both – and that certainly reduced my stress levels for a start!

Incidentally, novice writers aren’t the only ones who struggle to find enough time. I spotted a great quote from Douglas Adams (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy etc) recently: “I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.”

And finally, Flair for Words, run by Writers Bureau tutor Janie Jackson and her husband Cass, is currently running a short story competition. Your story shouldn’t exceed 1000 words and the entry fee is £3.00. The closing date is 3rd January 2011; so check out their website for full details of rules and how to enter.
