A Deadline, a Deadline, My Kingdom For a Deadline.

September 24th, 2014

deadline-blogHow long does it take to write a story? Well … how long have you got? I am SO bad at getting things finished. I’ve even got the first draft of a story about computers taking over domestic life that I wrote long-hand nearly twenty years ago, sat on a shelf in a dusty old notebook. I never proofed it, never worked it up to a second draft, never even got round to typing it into my laptop. It’s still relevant, and still works. So why haven’t I done anything with it? I don’t know. I’ve been busy.

Of course, these days, I really am busy – two kids to look after; rehearsing; recording; setting up gigs; writing these blogs … Like most of us, I’m on the go pretty much all the time. What I need, if I’m ever going to get anything done, is a deadline. So, how does this sound?  Writing Magazine is running a competition for adult fairy stories – tales with ‘acerbic humour’ and ‘a good deal of bite.’ The word limit is 1,500 to 1,700, and the closing date is 14 November.

Do you think I can do it? 14 November, that’s about seven weeks away. Should be easy enough, and I’ve already got an idea: there’s a little wood just over the hill from where we live – no one ever goes in. It’s where the old mines used to be; full of pits and shafts; very dangerous, apparently. It would be the perfect place for fairy-folk to hide away.

There’s actually news of four competitions in October’s Writing Magazine. You can get full details on their website. So if, like me, you’re having trouble getting things polished off, that’s four good reasons to get your head down.

Keep on writing!
