Christmas Is Coming…

December 3rd, 2018

I’m one of those people who won’t think about Christmas presents, cards and decorations until we hit 1st December. But we’re there now so I can really get into the swing of things.

If you’re still struggling with ideas for what you can buy the writer in your life (or you want to drop some hints to the people around you on what they might like to buy you), here are some ideas.

How about a Writers Bureau Competition Entry Voucher? As you know, we hold Poetry, Short Story and Flash Fiction competitions throughout the year and with one of our vouchers you will be eligible to enter any of our comps. They come in denominations of £5, £10 and £15 allowing multiple entries, depending on the competition. You can purchase them by calling our offices on 0161 819 9922 up to 20th December.

Incidentally, our latest Flash Fiction competition closed on Friday and we’re now busy going through the entries working on the short list and trying to find the winners. So watch this space!

Next, you might consider membership of the Association of Freelance Writers as a present. Members get great deals on writers’ resources, competitions and events. One of the benefits is half price subscription to Writing Magazine; plus you get a membership card which can help you gain entry to events as a freelance writer. In addition you get access to a choice of free online courses – you can select from Effective Time Management or Memoirs and Family Histories Writing. Personally, I find the time management course invaluable and even if you already think you’re well-organised there are lots of suggestions and tips that make great sense. Who knows, you might even manage to save more time to devote to your writing!

Finally, you could buy someone you love (even if that’s yourself) a Writers Bureau Course – or a voucher that can be put towards a course. Our full range of courses is shown here. Just call us if you can’t make up your mind about which is best for you, or you want to discuss how much you wish to spend on a voucher. We can have the course/voucher to you by Christmas if you contact us before 18th December. Again, the number is 0161 819 9922.

Some students mention that they have difficulty researching magazine markets because magazines are now so expensive – or they live abroad and they can’t get hold of a good selection. If you’re having this problem, you might consider joining Readly. It gives you access to 3,000 plus magazines and they’ve currently got an offer where you can use the service for two months for only £1.99. After that it goes up to £7.99 a month but you can cancel at any time. But the two month trial should give you a good idea whether you’re going to find it useful for very little outlay.

Also, I got an email from a student saying that her local library had a good selection of up-to-date magazines. We’d stopped recommending libraries as a possible place to do your research as with cutbacks the selection of magazines was almost non-existent. However, when I received the email I had a look round my local and they had lots of current magazines on offer. So, if you live in the UK and are struggling, you could always join your nearest main library.
