Why Perseverance Is Essential As A Writer

Writing can be extremely rewarding. To see your name in print is a thrilling experience, but do not be deceived – writing is a difficult thing to do. Writing is challenging and the competition is fierce, so achieving success is more difficult now than it used to be. Particularly since lockdown where more and more people have either started writing or picked it back up again.

This is where perseverance with your writing comes in. To persevere, means to keep doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success.

It’s easy to start a writing project because it’s new and exciting but once you start to receive one rejection after the next it can be disheartening. Read the rest of this entry »

Creating Your Perfect Writing Environment

  1. Whether you are lucky enough to have a dedicated office space, you work in the spare bedroom or have to work at the dining room/kitchen table – keep it tidy.  If your ‘writing space’ is free from clutter there’s a better chance that your mind will be, too!
  2. Make sure you have the necessary equipment.  A good broadband connection isn’t a luxury.  But we haven’t yet achieved the ‘paperless office’ so a printer and a filing cabinet – or some form of storage – is more or less essential.  And don’t forget supplies of stationery and any necessary reference books.  You might be able to ‘google’ any information you need but most writers still build up a library of their favourite reference books.

What’s YOUR Motivation?

First, thanks to Vicki for last week’s post. I think she’s right when she says that nearly everyone who has had a burning desire to write probably remembers the motivation that first prompted them to pursue their dream.

But for some people, it’s maintaining that motivation when things don’t seem to be going right that’s a problem. Your cherished novel has been rejected…and rejected…and rejected. That fascinating article about your trip to the saffron fields of Morocco just doesn’t seem to be catching the eye of a travel editor. Your carefully crafted short story hasn’t been short-listed in yet another competition.  At some point, any writer can start to feel that perhaps they just haven’t got what it takes.
