A Writing Life

Nicki-Feb-11Like so many of us, I always promised myself I’d write one day. And again like so many, life got in the way. There always seemed to be something  better,  and certainly more lucrative, to do. Having studied for my MA in English literary research while I was pregnant with my first child, and worked part time as a university English lecturer whilst pregnant with the second, then taken a full time office job while both boys were small, I told myself it was now or never. Finished!

Fireworks-blogHey, I’ve made an album! All my own songs. I played most of the instruments too. It took a year to record, and we did the final session last Tuesday. So that’s it – job done. I’ve just got to sell the thing now and … oomph! … there I am, back to Earth with a bump.

Seems like polishing off an album is just like finishing a collection of poems, a set of stories, or a novel. After all the great creative work, you have to get down to business. Should you release the thing yourself (self-publish)? Or try for a record company (publisher)? Who’ll do the artwork? Should you get a stock of hard copies made, or just go digital? Gizza Job!

jobs_BlogA friend of ours got a new job last week – Senior Copywriter for one of the big banks. I’m not sure what the salary is, but it’s more than her last post (also copywriting) and comes with all the perks of full-time employment – holiday pay; sickness benefits; pension plan, etc. Understandably, she’s delighted, and though she’s not planning a mansion on Millionaires’ Row just yet, she may well take an extra holiday some time in the new year.
