Creative Writing And Copywriting – What’s The Difference?

When I embarked on the Writers Bureau Comprehensive Creative Writing Course, I had no thought of copywriting. For me, it was going to be all about writing for magazines and working on my fiction projects.

Fast forward a couple of years and someone asked me to help them write the copy for their new website. At the time I was struggling to gain traction with editors, and it seemed like a good opportunity, so I thought I’d go for it.

I didn’t know much about copywriting, but I knew about writing. And my background in marketing was sure to help me out. Despite a severe case of imposter syndrome, I worked on the Homepage and About Us for my new client. Read the rest of this entry »

Further On Down The Road

Road-blogLooking for inspiration in some back copies of E-Zee Writer, I came across a great article by Esther Newton called ‘Plan B.’ It’s all about what to do if your dream of becoming the next Ian Fleming or Toni Morrison doesn’t pan out. Obviously, with my history of not finishing fantasy trilogies, it got me thinking, eventually wishing I could go back and have a quiet word with the writer I used to be in the mid-nineties, when the first words of my magnum opus were committed to floppy disc (remember them?) Somebody Should …

Fuss-blogCopywriters get  a rough deal, don’t you think? Journalists, scriptwriters, novelists … they all get loads of attention. Some even become proper celeb’s. Not What I Expected!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt’s a funny old world, isn’t it? Sometimes you think your career is going to go one way and then you find yourself heading off in another direction completely. That’s where I found myself a couple of weeks ago when an opportunity came up that was too good to miss. You see, I’m now in pastures new! After 10 years at The Writers Bureau, I’ve moved to a new position in a totally different sector – law. Who’d have thought it? Honestly, if you’d asked me a few weeks ago if I would consider working for a large firm of corporate solicitors, I would have probably said no. But, after reading about what they required for their Content Executive role (yes, that’s my fancy new title!) and meeting with the Marketing Manager, I decided I’d really quite like the new challenge.
