Outside The Box

June 15th, 2015

BoxesI’m thinking about article writing again; getting ready to make a first pitch to an editor later this summer. I’m all set to work on text, and there will be pictures (either ones I’ve taken myself or sourced images with permissions and licenses.) But I’ve just been flicking through some old copies of E-Zee Writer, where I stumbled on an article by the always informative Simon Whaley, and it’s given me some great ideas for bonus features that are sure to make me look like a seasoned pro’ – boxouts, side-panels and side-bars.

And what are these mysterious things? Well, you already know. I can’t think of a magazine that doesn’t use them. In fact, there’s one just over there on the right hand side of this page: ‘Impress Your Editor,’ with a series of points to remember, though I could just as easily have given it a graph, a chart, or a list of pertinent facts … because that’s what boxouts, side-panels and side-bars are – little windows within articles giving precise nuggets of information to support, or expand on the main text. And now Simon’s got me looking at them, they’re really useful – perfect for getting across lots of hard facts as succinctly as possible. Apparently editors love them too because they help break up and add visual interest to their magazines.

So, text, pictures, boxouts, side-panels, side-bars … all I need now is a commission.

Keep on writing!phil-blog-sig
