Have your book published for free!

December 24th, 2010

First, a big thank you to Susan for last week’s blog.  I couldn’t agree more – I visit my local library frequently and often order books I’ve read about in newspaper and magazine reviews – it saves me a fortune!  But I suspect that as money gets tighter cuts will get deeper – already, many libraries in the UK are no longer able to afford to stock a range of magazines.  I know it’s a cliché, but if we don’t use our libraries, we could lose them!

The Scribe

Before going any further, please have a look at December’s issue of E-zee Writer.  This month we’ve a terrific article by Writers Bureau tutor, Heather Cooke – it’s clever, informative and shows what you can aspire to if you hone your writing skills!  (And if you’re not already a subscriber, take the chance to sign up while you’re there.)

How To win yourself £50

I’ve just had an email from Nick Lewis at HowTo.  They’re now taking entries for their December writing competition, offering you the chance to win £50 for a ‘how to’ article.  The prize will be awarded to the three best articles submitted in December.  Your article can be in any category and on any topic, provided it’s a ‘how to’ piece, but make sure you read their guidelines to be in with a chance.  (By the way, they tend to hold a monthly competition – so check out the site in January too.)

First-class Fiction

I’ve just finished reading The Lacuna by Barbara Kingsolver, who won this year’s Orange Prize.  I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’ll certainly try some of her other books.  But what I found most interesting was the short piece at the back of the book about the publisher – Faber .  Established in 1929, their first editor was T S Eliot and they claim to have amongst their list of writers five Booker Prize winners and eleven Nobel Laureates.  Quite impressive  – as is their website!  There’s plenty going on there to interest any keen reader, or writer.

Next week, my guest blogger will be Writers Bureau student Christine Muir who will be telling you about her New Year resolutions – and the steps she will be taking to ensure she keeps them.

So, all that remains is for me to wish you a Happy Christmas and a peaceful and prosperous New Year.  And my advice for achieving that?  Stock up on a pile of books you’ve been intending to read all year.  When the temptation to attack the TV/children/in-laws (delete as appropriate) with a gnawed turkey drumstick becomes overwhelming, simply retire to somewhere quiet with your chosen book and chill out.

Prize Draw

And finally, don’t forget the prize draw that Writers Bureau is holding in conjunction with Indepenpress.  There’s the chance to win a publishing package worth £795 and a copy of our newest course How to Market Your Book. You’ve still got until 31st January to enter.
