Is Blogging Worth Your Time?

This is a difficult question to answer, as it all depends on how much time and effort you are prepared to put into it. Some people spend hours and hours on their blog because it’s a way for them to make money, with advertising and so on. But, what if you’re just using it to promote yourself as a creative writer, is it really worth your time?

Well, the best way to evaluate this is to look at what you need to do to have a blog that people want to come back to time and again. You can’t just start writing and expect to gain readers with no effort. So, if you do decide to start a blog, these are some of the points you’ll have to keep in mind if you want to make it worthwhile:

Time – you will have to spend time thinking up topics, writing interesting posts and publishing them. What you consider interesting may not be so great for your readers. For example, it seems that most readers don’t like to read blogs that just shamelessly and constantly push them to buy their book. You may have to try different approaches to see what gets the best response. Perhaps include tit bits about the writing process and you life in general as this can help your readers see you as a ‘real’ person rather than another faceless writer.

Regular updates – you will have to update your blog on a regular basis. Now, this does not mean that you have to post every day. You can post once every week or once every month if that’s what you want. But, if that’s what you are going to do, make sure you say so. If your readers assume they are going to get a new post every week, or worse still you tell them you will post every week, and then you don’t – they’ll soon lose interest in your blog and won’t bother coming back.

Be consistent – this refers to the level of usefulness or interest in the blog posts. You need to consistently offer posts that have some value to your readers. How you interpret ‘value’ is tricky and depends on what you want to give to your followers. Do you want to offer practical tips to help them as writers too, or do you just want to engage them in your everyday writing life? Again, it may be a case of trying different things and seeing what works.

Be accurate – this refers to the quality of your posts, spelling, grammar and the like and is especially important if you trying to convince people you are a great writer. It’s also good to check any facts and figures you may be quoting, don’t just repeat stuff other people say without checking for yourself.

Keep up to date – you’ll also have to upgrade your blog to make sure it doesn’t start to look out-dated, which may require you having to invest money.

Market and promote – readers are not just going to magically find you, so you will have to market and promote your blog regularly. You can do this through social media, Facebook, twitter etc, which is generally free but takes up a lot of your time or through paid avenues, such as advertising.

Don’t react badly to criticisms – if you decide to allow comments on your blog, you should also be prepared to get negative feedback. But don’t let this throw you, people have many reasons for leaving negative comments, some do it just because you have the nothing better to do – trolls! Stay calm and counter any negative feedback with positive points. Or, you can choose not to allow comments until you’ve read them.

There are more steps you can take, but do you see what I’m getting at here? Creating and maintaining a great blog that attracts and keeps followers is not something that just happens – it takes time and effort. What you have to decide is do you think it’s worth it?
