To Blog or Not to Blog

August 9th, 2013

Having enjoyed writing a guest blog on The Writers Bureau website, I thought I would start my own blog. Though, it wasn’t without feelings of trepidation after having a complete disaster with my website.

So I wondered if it would be the same with a blog (believe me, if anyone can go wrong, it’s me!) I needn’t have worried; it couldn’t have been easier.

There are numerous blog services offering free blogs and they all guide you through the process in simple stages. Most also have videos showing you what to do. Even if you make a mistake, it can simply be undone. It’s virtually impossible to go wrong. I chose to go with WordPress but there are lots of other popular blog platforms including Blogger.

My blog looked a little basic to begin with but as everything was so straight forward, I soon learned how to make it more colourful and how to make the layout more eye-catching. I’ve enjoyed gradually building it up and I’ve found that even if I don’t have time to work on my own creative writing on a particular day, having a blog makes me write something on a regular basis. Posting something regularly is essential if you want people to follow your blog and to retain an interest in you.

I have themes which I post on particular days. For example, my followers know that on a Tuesday I’ll post my award for ‘Funny of the Week’, often an amusing quote from a writer, a typo I’ve seen or a funny photo and on a Friday I post my ‘Top Tip of the Week’, which is always writing related.

As well as making me write, for me, I’ve found that blogging is tremendous fun, it’s honed my technical skills, I’ve found new, supportive friends and also learned all sorts from fellow bloggers.

So if you’ve been toying with the idea of become a blogger – do it. It’s an excellent way for people to see your work and to become familiar with your name. My husband is a techno geek and was sure I was going to fail (perhaps because of the howls of frustration, with my website, and my almost hurling my laptop across the room.) So if I can do it, so can you!
