Annual Bloggers Bash!

May 31st, 2019

Thanks to Ann for last week’s contribution. When I’m trying to check facts I often find myself going off at a tangent and having to give myself a strict ‘talking to’ before getting back on track. But, as she says, it’s never all a waste of time. Some of those interesting discoveries might just trigger an idea for a new, and potentially lucrative, piece of writing.

I was speaking to one of our tutors, Esther Chilton, this week and she mentioned The Bloggers Bash  which will be held in London on Saturday 15th June. It’s a social event for bloggers, bringing together the blogging community and it’s now in its fifth year.

There will be opportunities to socialise and network; presentations on blogging and marketing your blog from guest speakers; a workshop on creating flat lay images for your website and social media and a panel debate. And talking of the panel debate, Esther will be one of the panel members. So if you live in the London area (or fancy a good day out) and you either  blog already, or are contemplating starting, then this could be just what you’re looking for.

Moving away from blogs to self-publishing, are you aware of the Amazon Kindle Storyteller Award 2019? They say:

“The Kindle Storyteller Award 2019 is a £20,000 literary prize recognising outstanding writing. It is open to writers publishing in English in any genre, who publish their work through Kindle Direct Publishing between 1st May and 31 August 2019. Readers play a significant role in selecting the winner, helped by a panel of judges including various book industry experts.”

So, if you’ve written your literary masterpiece and are considering using Kindle Direct Publishing, now might be a good time to bite the bullet and get on with it. The instructions on how to enter are very clear if you visit their site – definitely worth looking at if you’re at the stage where your book is as good as you can make it and ready to go.

And staying on the theme of getting your book published, The Historical Writers’ Association has launched an award for a new work of historical fiction in conjunction with Sharpe Books. They say:

“If you have an unpublished novel set at least 35 years in the past, this competition is a brand new opportunity to share it with the world. The prize is open to any complete manuscript between 40,000 and 100,000 words

“In 2019 the HWA are teaming up with Sharpe Books to encourage and support writers of Historical Fiction, offering published and unpublished authors alike the chance to win £500 and the offer of a publishing contract with Sharpe Books. Novels in any genre are eligible – mystery, crime adventure, romance or literary – the only condition is that the majority of the story is set at least 35 years in the past.”

The entry fee is £20 and the closing date for entries is 30th September 2019.

My guest next week is Jacqueline Pye, who has been studying our Poetry Course. She’ll be giving objective advice on how to get the most out of any writing course, once you’ve made the decision to enrol.
