Not What I Expected!

June 6th, 2014

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt’s a funny old world, isn’t it? Sometimes you think your career is going to go one way and then you find yourself heading off in another direction completely. That’s where I found myself a couple of weeks ago when an opportunity came up that was too good to miss. You see, I’m now in pastures new! After 10 years at The Writers Bureau, I’ve moved to a new position in a totally different sector – law. Who’d have thought it? Honestly, if you’d asked me a few weeks ago if I would consider working for a large firm of corporate solicitors, I would have probably said no. But, after reading about what they required for their Content Executive role (yes, that’s my fancy new title!) and meeting with the Marketing Manager, I decided I’d really quite like the new challenge.

The writing skills I learned during my time at The Writers Bureau really clinched it for me. I also used my proofreading skills to highlight my suitability for the role by taking one of their published blog posts and correcting it. I then demonstrated my copy-writing skills by rewriting it with, what I considered to be, a much better flow. It seems they thought so too! That little extra effort I put in was appreciated, and served as a great way of showing off my skills. I also provided them with about ten examples of my writing, which is why you should always keep copies of your work. And, to help them understand how I work, included notes that described my creative process too.

So, what’s the point of this post? Well, I wanted to demonstrate that writing skills are both highly sought after and easily transferable. Once you have the ability to write well, you can take that skill and apply it to virtually any business, which means a whole host of opportunities open up for you.

I know practically nothing about law by the way, but that’s where the research skills I’ve learnt will come into their own!

So, that’s it – my very last piece of writing for The Writers Bureau. I shall miss the students and all the staff at The Writers Bureau, and I wish you all the best of luck in the future.
