This month we have expert advice from Vanessa on writing book reviews, Ten Top Tips looks at creating the perfect author talk and Student Successes, Inspiration and Useful Websites are, as ever, a source of boundless encouragement.

Hello Dear Readers,

Well, we all know the big February event. Good old St Valentine will work his magic and make plenty of lucky people feel like they are the only person in the whole wide world. All together now...Ahhh!

But, what other events is February famous for? Well, the Christian festivals of Candlemas (did you know that snowdrops are also known as Candelmas Bells?), Shrove Tuesday, Ash Wednesday and Kissing Friday. There’s also Chinese New Year, Groundhog Day and, every four years, a very special Leap Day, to name but a few.

So, although St Valentine’s Day may be the most well-known event, there are certainly plenty of others to keep you entertained as we move through the month.

On to business! Do you want the opportunity to get paid for reading books? Become a book reviewer and you may do just that. Vanessa Couchman’s expert advice on how to write the perfect book review is the place to start. Ten Top Tips shows you how to promote yourself through personal appearances – our guide will show you how to organise and deliver successful author talks. In Student Stories we have our first feedback of success for our new Proofreading and Copy Editing course from Maura, as well as some further successes from the student forums.

If you can get out and about this month you should try to get to the Poetry from Art at the Tate Modern: Shaping Poems – Image Making with Pascale Petit. It’s “a chance to encounter Tate Modern’s magical setting in the evening when the galleries are quiet, when you can embark on an intimate dialogue with international masterpieces to develop your own poetry in unexpected directions.” To be honest this sounds really lovely and I wish I could go along myself. It’s taking place from 28th February - 4th April, booking is essential and it’s £120 for the term.

If you fancy yourself as a poet, why not try our Poetry Writing course? Written by one of the UK’s leading poets, Alison Chisholm, it’s a fantastic introduction to the world of poetry.

And finally, congratulations to Anne Perdeaux, for bagging herself the title of Writer of The Year! And further congratulations go to the runners-up Lucy, Priya, Daniel and Lynette. Kudos to you all!

Happy writing!

Shelley
