Return to E-zee Writer back issues
This month Simon Whaley shows us the value of media packs, Ten Top Tips covers reader’s letters, plus there are success stories and ideas to inspire.
Be inspired to keep the faith by the success of others. This month Pranav shows us that visual impairment is no barrier to writing, the value of just being published and how to spin a bad situation into a potential article idea!
“When I started the course, I dreamt of dollops of cash dribbling into my bank account. I used to think that no company could give such an iron clad guarantee without being very sure of itself. The refund is always a comforting option. However, so far, I have earned my greatest rewards via payment in kind.
“My first success came with the publication of my article in Dialogue Magazine (www.blindskills.com/nov_dec_2009_toc.html). My article related to migrating from the keyboard to using speech-recognition.
“Then the next assignment fell into my lap. A friend wanted me to write some chapters for a course that a major university here is launching. I did that and although the pay advertised was good, it has not come through. This is a subject for another article if I recover the money. The amount owed is about $300.
“Around the time of assignment 6 I had the chance to participate in a competition conducted by Bookshare India`. The competition involved reading books from Bookshare and reviewing them. The prizes were very attractive. I wanted the second prize, which was a screenless specialist book reading machine. The deadline was January 6th and on 8th January, I learned that I had won the first prize! The device costs roughly Rs. 18000 which is about $400.
“I am up to assignment 7 and the cost of the course is more than recompensed; though not in direct cash receipts; so the day job continues to populate my bank account and my tax filing remains simple.”
Pranav Lal, India
Pranav, and other students in the same position – I would advise that you chase up your overdue payment. It may be that they need a gentle reminder that you are still waiting. Although, it can sometimes be the case that it takes a long time to get paid what with red tape and all that comes with it – all part and parcel of being a writer I’m afraid!
Thanks, as always, to Pranav for sharing his inspirational story with us. If you would like a prospectus for the Comprehensive Creative Writing Course please email us here with your full name and postal address.
