“Hi everyone, not a huge deal, but a magazine has published my letter as it’s letter of the month, which gets a prize. I was delighted to get the star spot, but also this is one of my target magazines for articles so it's a good start. Hope it's not the last... Vanessa.”

“Sent a short article to Mother and Baby/Pregnancy and Birth over a month ago, chased two weeks ago and again today. Finally got an e-mail back saying they want to run it in P&B! So excited - waiting to hear more details and no idea if it's paid or not but that's the first pitched article that's got somewhere. Over the moon and contemplating bubbly... a little premature, perhaps?”
Patience can be the key with many magazines.

“I just received a copy of My Weekly through the post. It has one of my tips and photos in it. I'm really pleased with this as it's my first success with My Weekly. It's also nice to see that they sent a contributor copy, which most other magazines don't. This is my 13th published tip. Let's hope it’s a lucky 13...”

“Hi, I had written an article as part of Assignment 4 and had then submitted it to a magazine. The editor sent me a polite rejection letter. I was bogged down for weeks but then decided to try my luck with another magazine. Surprise! Surprise! Within 24 hours I got a reply saying they loved my article and would publish it in their forthcoming issue. What is more they are paying me for it too. Moral: If with the first magazine you don't succeed, try, try and try again!”
Very true Smita.

“A few months ago I contacted a local parenting magazine and asked if I could contribute. After several months (and a longer story I won't share!) I was sent a features list to choose from and earlier this week submitted my first piece - and the editor liked it, so I'm getting a three-page feature published in May! It's a small magazine and it's not paid, but it's a start, and helps build up the all-important portfolio. I'm also doing another article for the same issue as well...I am very excited about it!”
As you say, Alison, being paid is not always the most important thing, especially when you are just starting out. It is more beneficial to get your portfolio going as this will lead to paid work.

“I've just received a letter from the Editor of The Lady saying she is going to print my letter in next week's issue. Its non-paying but am still chuffed!”

“I'm so excited, I sent a story about my rescue cats to Your Cat magazine in December and have just had a letter saying they would like to publish it! Don't know when yet. It was part of my third assignment so I'm really happy. It makes me want to carry on after taking ages to do assignment four. Back to work on five now!”
